Power and Toughness—I Don’t Like to Touch

Limited is the throw-away collection of formats. There’ s no lasting relationships formed with cards there is in constructed Magic. I’ve been married to Thragtusk and Restoration Angel for about a year. As an atheist it’s incredibly difficult to work with beings of an angelic persuasion but this one has a special touch that flips my beasts, makes more beasts, and gains me a little life each time. I also enjoy repeatedly blinking Acidic Slimes and shutting down whichever control deck is hip at the moment.

Anyway, so this new set, Dragon’s Maze, has dropped and I’ve already played approximately 10,000 sealed events. I’ve been drafting the shit out of the RTR block on the Decked Drafter app on my iPhone. The format seems incredibly difficult.

On Saturday’s sealed event at Twenty Sided Store I played the following:

1 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
39 other cards

Round One vs John

John was a pleasure to play Magic with. I won in two games. As you can see some new Star Wars sleeves entered the battlefield. They’re ok. John and I sat across from one another during deck construction. Most of the time was spent making heaps of inappropriate but tasteful jokes so I didn’t get a good look at his pool. After I smash’em we take a look at his sideboard and the cards he left out, mostly dudes, and throw in the dope ones that would help him, hopefully, for the rest of the tournament.

One game my side of the board looked like this:

Little did I know I would lose the next two straight and maybe should’ve had John look at my sideboard for better cards. I was on the ramp into big dudes plan. I had like only one big dude, so, uh, yeah, not so hot. Hypersonic Dragon, Jelenn Sphinx, and Loxodon Smiter don’t require much ramp. Whoops.

Round Two vs Austin #1

Austin declined to have his photo taken. Another one of those “I don’t like to have any internet presence” type dudes. He played a Boros Reckoner and said, “Good news is he’s my only good card.” He then played like three more bombs. He did the same thing minus the Reckoner game two and I lost.

Round Two vs Austin #2

Austin’s deck is the same as mine and BOOM! he’s got Sepulchral Primordial to grab my yarded Ruric Thar. He does a similar thing the following game. My abilities to withhold total emotional collapse are flawless and I get some air.

Round Four vs Nick

Here’s Nick and Giaco. They’re both good dudes. Nick and I split our prize packs. I then stomped all over him. Or maybe I didn’t. Who knows? It’s a blur of Archer related humor and sarcasm.

We played a no-sideboard match of Standard. He was on Omnidoor something something ‘cept he had no Door to Nothingness and I saw a herd or two of Thragtusks. I played this deck:

4 Zhur-Taa Druid
2 Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
1 Ghor-Clan Rampager
4 Domri Rade
1 Aurelia, the Warleader
4 Loxodon Smiter
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
3 Thragtusk
4 Restoration Angel
4 Huntmaster of the Fells
4 Clifftop Retreat
2 Kessig Wolf Run
4 Avacyn's Pilgrim
4 Arbor Elf
1 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple Garden
4 Forest
4 Sacred Foundry

He won game one after some kind of unholy cut of my deck that left me with two Loxodon Smiters and every single freaking mana dork. Games two and three I won with Domri Rade drawing me lots of cards (I think I whiffed on a land once) and the final game, with Domri Rade at eight loyalty, I played Ruric Thar. Nick cast Fog in response and couldn’t cast Supreme Verdict on his turn without killing himself.

My relationship with Ruric Thar is just blossoming. I’ve hung with him in two separate formats and I can already tell you for absolute certain that I love him, er, them, or whatever you call a two headed, two personality’d ogre warrior.

I have yet to throw away a Ruric Thar. In fact, I’ve already put six in my Standard deck.

RURIC THAR FOR KING(S)!

Later kids,
Matt
